Characterising Problem Solving Methods by Gradual Requirements: Overcoming the Yes/no Distinction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper makes two contributions to the study of problem solving methods. First, we extend the current theory on how to characterise problem-solving methods. We show that the current theory is not strong enough, and does not allow the characterisation of many natural problem-solving methods. Secondly, we show that characterisations of problem-solving methods should be stated in gradual terms, and not in terms of yes/no requirements. Such a gradual approach to charac-terising problem-solving methods allows methods to use domain knowledge that only partially fulllls the requirements, in which case the methods still produce useful, although suboptimal solutions. Problem-solving methods with such gradual behaviour can be applied and re-used in a wider set of circumstances than classically characterised methods.

متن کاملCharacterising approximate problem-solving by partially fulfilled pre- and postconditions
In Software Engineering, the functionality of a program is traditionally characterised by preand postconditions: if the preconditions are fulfilled then the postconditions are guaranteed to hold, but if the preconditions are not fulfilled, no postconditions are guaranteed at all. In this paper, we study how the functionality of a program is affected when the preconditions are only partially ful...
متن کاملThe Effect of Problem-Solving Skills Training on the Frequency of Selective Episiotomy among Midwives
Background & aim: The decision on whether or not to do episiotomy is ultimately made by midwives. Problem-solving is an essential skill in the workplace situations, which help overcoming unpredictable circumstances without relying on the others. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of problem-solving skills training on the frequency of selective episioto...
متن کاملSolving Multiple Fuels Dynamic Environmental/Economic Dispatch Problem and Incentive Based Demand Response Considering Spinning Reserve Requirements
In this paper a new integrated model of the dynamic environmental/economic dispatch (DEED) problem and emergency demand response program (EDRP) has been presented by which their interactions are investigated. DEED schedules the online generators power output over the whole dispatch period subject to some practical constraints so that the fuel costs and emission are optimized simultaneously. EDR...
متن کاملA FUZZY MODEL FOR ASSESSMENT PROCESSES
The methods of assessing the individuals’ performance usually applied in practice are based on principles of the bivalent logic (yes-no). However, fuzzy logic, due to its nature of including multiple values, offers a wider and richer field of resources for this purpose. In this paper we use principles of fuzzy logic in developing a new method for assessing the performance of groups of individua...
